After Peter Mayhew, now 73, played the Wookie throughout the original series, now Joonas Suotamo, 31, has stepped up to the plate.
The star is actually a Finnish basketball player, and stands at a towering six feet and 10 inches tall, or 2.09m.
He will also play the iconic supporting role in Solo: A Star Wars Story; due in cinemas next May.
Chewbacca is, as it stands, his only professional film credit, after he was a double for Mayhew on 2015’s The Force Awakens.
He told starwarsinterviews.com: “I was made aware of the casting process and the fact they were looking for someone to play Chewbacca by a Facebook post. At the time I didn’t think I would get it.
“But time went by and three months later they called me because they had learned through the basketball association of Finland that I was tall, had blue eyes and they became interested and that is how it happened.
“I had to audition then and got the part.”
Suotamo was at the European premiere for The Last Jedi earlier this week, making his debut on the red carpet in the UK.
Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi is out now on a wave of strong critical reviews, with a high 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Suotamo stars alongside returning Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie among others.
The film will release in the US tomorrow (December 15).
