Liverpool face another fight to stop Coutinho from signing for Barcelona with the Catalan giants set to renew their interest in the Brazilian next month.
The 25-year-old nearly moved to the Nou Camp back in the summer but Liverpool embarrassed Barcelona by rejecting three bids.
And Catalan newspaper Sport say Barcelona are fearful that Jurgen Klopp’s side could leave them red-faced again in January.
Ernesto Valverde’s side are quietly optimistic of getting a deal for Coutinho done.
That, despite the fact his dazzling displays have breathed new life into Liverpool’s Premier League campaign.
But they know Klopp will be unlikely to give up his star performer without a fight.
Sport say Barcelona are worried Liverpool could cut them off midway through negotiations.
Many mocked the club when Coutinho – and PSG’s Angel Di Maria – ended up staying put.
And Barcelona have seemingly made steps to try and ensure that does not happen.
The La Liga side hope that the player’s contract is all ironed out by the end of the first week in January.
And should negotiations reach an impasse, they are ready to go for Mesut Ozil of Arsenal instead.
Meanwhile, former Barcelona star Ronaldo has warned Coutinho of the dangers Brazilian players face at the Nou Camp.
“I felt much more happy and more connected to Real Madrid, despite having lived a great year in Barcelona,” Ronaldo told Esporte Interativo.
“In the end, my history with Barça was very bad, similar to the one Neymar had.
“Barcelona has always had issues with Brazilian players: Neymar, Romario, Ronaldinho and me.
“We were all treated badly by the club in the end, despite all our contributions and dedication.”
