The France international looked as though he would be joining Manchester United at the end of last season.
But Atletico Madrid’s failure to overturn a transfer ban imposed by FIFA in the summer meant the La Liga side would have been unable to sign a replacement, prompting Griezmann to reject a move away.
Rumours about his future have refused to go away though and Barcelona have recently made strong attempts to steal a march on their European rivals for Griezmann’s signature.
Barcelona’s alleged approach for Griezmann has led to Atletico Madrid reporting the La Liga leaders to FIFA.
However, Spanish football expert Balague believes Barcelona remain the favourites to sign the 26-year-old.
“It’s very close. If he hasn’t been signed it’s because he cannot be signed but they’re very close to agreeing personal terms with Griezmann,” Balague told Sky Sports podcast ‘Transfer talk’.
“Manchester United were the only ones to put in a massive offer for the player in the summer. It was basically all agreed, the player was happy to go and then he thought about it twice because Atletico Madrid couldn’t sign anyone and he decided to stay on.
“That surprised Mourinho, who had spoken to Griezmann, but he didn’t go that way.
“Now Manchester United are waiting to see what his decision will be.
“Out of those two teams, it sounds like Barcelona are favourites, but we’ll see how it goes.”
