German designer Andrea Mocellin has unveiled a new foldable-wheel design that could revolutionize mobility.

While folding bikes have become a common sight among urban commuters, they’re only as small as the wheels allow them to be.

After years of research – and hundreds of 3D models – the inventor has revealed the incredible Revolve wheel that collapses like an umbrella, allowing riders to have the benefits of a full-sized wheel while saving about 60 percent space when needed.

German designer Andrea Mocellin has unveiled a new foldable-wheel design that could revolutionize mobility. Revolve has a 26-inch wheel – so, you wouldn’t sacrifice size where it’s needed. And, it collapses to a third of its size

THE REVOLVE WHEEL

Revolve is a full-size 26in wheel that collapses to just 8 inches when folded.

The design relies on a hexagon structure, according to the website. It uses an airless tires and an aluminium frame.

Revolve wheels can be locked and unlocked using a magnetic key.

The wheel can be made in three different styles to accommodate different types of rideables: folded wheel, universal when, and omni wheel.

‘Revolve has been designed and invented with aim to be the first modular wheel, which will open new frontiers for the present and future of foldable vehicles,’ Mocellin explains in a video about the design.

The wheel could be incorporated into folding bikes and even wheelchairs, according to the inventor, making it much easier to bring personal mobility devices onto trains or in cars, and to store them away when they’re not in use.

‘Large wheels are required on all human-powered transportation for performance and efficiency,’ Mocellin said.

In what the creator says is just a simple move, the wheel closes down to just 8-inches.

It can also be propped up so it stands on its own.

‘The patented mechanism is being reached after years of several hundred 3D models and dozens of physical prototypes to get the most efficient and accurate folding mechanism,’ Mocellin said.

‘The wheelchair can benefit from the large wheel – easy to store everywhere at any time, compact and solid, Revolve allows the user to use the wheelchair in every condition with a modularity never seen before.’

It isn’t just for bikes and wheelchairs; the inventor has revealed a number of different applications that could benefit from the design, from drones to compact trolleys.

According to Mocellin, the modular wheel could finally solve a prevailing problem faced every day by commuters in busy cities.

‘I have experienced so many folding bicycles with small wheels that are complicated and ugly when they are closed,’ Mocellin told New Atlas.

‘I wanted to ensure my wheel was beautiful to look at when it was closed. The people who will use my wheels will store their bicycle inside their apartment, and they do not want ugly folded bicycles to be stored inside their living space.’
