That’s what Wolff has now confirmed while discussing his relationship with the 2017 F1 champion.
Hamilton joined Mercedes from McLaren ahead of the 2013 campaign.
And following Sebastian Vettel’s success with Red Bull that year, the next four F1 titles have been won by Mercedes.
The German constructors have Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to thank for their World Drivers’ Championship haul.
And Wolff has confirmed Hamilton used the threat Ferrari would pose to Mercedes in order to earn himself a deal with his team.
“Yes, he said that [there would be a title fight with Ferrari] and I thought: ‘He might be right!’,” Wolff told Formula1.com.
“And here we go: he was right!
“Because the years 2014 to 2016 were outliers – you cannot sustain such dominance forever in a sport that is as competitive as Formula One.”
Wolff also revealed how well he gets on with Hamilton following their strained relationship when Rosberg was flying the flag for Mercedes.
“A million times closer,” he added.
Wolff will be hoping Hamilton gets his F1 title defence off to the best possible start when the 2018 season kicks off in Australia next March.
