The star has become renowned as one of Hollywood’s best, most versatile actresses – but can she really sing on top of everything else?

The answer is yes – and the vocals you hear on screen are indeed hers.

Williams, 37, is no stranger to flexing her vocal chords in a musical: in fact it was only 2014 when she played Sally Bowles in Cabaret.

She recently said of singing in an interview with the New Zealand Herald: “I have just found that it makes me happy.

“I find that singing and dancing is a direct path to joy. And I just wanted more of it, that’s why I wanted to make the film.

“Singing is natural for me. I don’t know if I’m the greatest in the world at it, but I just love it!”

She has a number of credits in the movie: she performs A Million Dreams with Ziv Zaifman and Hugh Jackman, and then sings Tightrope.

The Greatest Showman appeared to be a flop on its opening weekend at the US box office over Christmas, but it has since proven to have real staying power.

In fact, its recent weekend-to-weekend increase in revenue (76.3%) marked the largest ever for a film playing in over 3,000 US cinemas, and the fourth largest ever.

Its critical reception may not have been rapturous (it holds a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes), but it has clearly found warmth from the audience.

And with the soundtrack album currently at No1 in the UK, its appeal isn’t dying down just yet.
