FTSE LIVE: London stocks plunge as dramatic global sell-off continues

FTSE LIVE: London stocks plunge on dramatic global sell-off; WHSmith profits lifted as travel stores take off; Troubled publisher Johnston Press hangs ‘For Sale’ sign up

The FTSE 100 has started the day in sharp decline – sinking nearly 1.6 per cent at the open – as investors adjust to a world of higher US interest rates and join in with a dramatic global sell-off.

In company news, WHSmith has posted a 4 per cent uplift in full-year profits, as a strong performance at its shops in airports and train stations offset declines at its more challenged High Street business.

And Johnston Press, the publisher of the i newspaper and The Scotsman, has put itself up for sale as it scrambles to pay back £220million in loans.
