The England wicketkeeper conceded the good work done in the last two years in danger of being wasted after a string of bad publicity and he accepted the negative publicity is in danger or breaking the trust between the team and fans.

England have been buried under a blizzard of bad headlines following heir latest late night indiscretions last Thursday night going into Friday morning ahead of the third Test.

And asked whether he felt the side had let down Root, Bairstow, speaking at a Yorkshire Tea sponsored event in Perth, said: “I think everyone realises that is something we have done. Not just him, but we move on from that now and that is something that has happened and been dealt with and we’ve got a chance as a group of men to go out there and front up.

“We need to rebuild the trust we had built over the last few years. And that starts on Thursday morning. You rebuild it by winning games of cricket. You have to go out and win games and that starts at training and then in the Test.”

Bairstow believes that the adversity of the past week can bring the England Test side together.

“There is no reason why not. We can win games of cricket and there is no reason why we can’t do that for the rest of the series,” he said.

“Could this be a watershed moment? Yes absolutely yes.”

England go into their crucial third Test at Perth on Thursday with Australia already 2-0 up in the series but needing two wins and a draw at worst from the final three Tests to retain the Ashes.
